    What Is 10K Gold?

10 karat gold is 41.7% pure gold (10 parts gold out of 24 total parts). The remaining 58.3% consists of alloy metals including copper, silver, zinc, and nickel. This high alloy content makes 10K the most durable and scratch-resistant of all standard gold karats.

10K is the minimum karat that can legally be marketed and sold as "gold" in the United States. It is the most affordable option for real gold jewelry and is commonly used in class rings, affordable necklaces, bracelets, and everyday wear pieces.

When using a gold estimator to calculate melt value, 10K pieces will be worth about 42% of the pure gold price per gram. While less valuable per gram than 14K gold or 18K gold, 10K items can still have significant scrap value at today's high gold prices.

    10K Gold Price Formula

The formula for calculating 10K gold value:

    Weight (grams) ÷ 31.1035 × Spot Price × 0.417 = Melt Value

    Worked example: A 10K class ring weighing 12 grams with gold at $5,300 per troy ounce. 12 ÷ 31.1035 = 0.3858 troy ounces. 0.3858 × $5,300 × 0.417 = $852.77 melt value.

    Common 10K Gold Items

10K gold is found in many everyday jewelry items. Typical weights include:

    • Class ring: 8–20 grams (high school rings tend to be lighter; college rings heavier)
    • Rope chain (20"): 10–30 grams
    • Figaro bracelet: 5–15 grams
    • Hoop earrings: 2–6 grams per pair
    • Men's signet ring: 6–12 grams

Always use a digital scale accurate to 0.01 grams when calculating your gold's scrap value with our calculator.

10K vs 14K Gold: Value Comparison

The key difference is gold content. 10K contains 41.7% gold while 14K contains 58.3%. This means a 14K piece of the same weight is worth roughly 40% more in melt value than a 10K piece.

However, 10K gold is more durable and less prone to scratching. It's the practical choice for everyday jewelry that takes more wear and tear. When selling scrap, always sort 10K items separately from higher-karat pieces to ensure accurate pricing.
